According to the CDC, it is estimated that up to 3.8 million sports and recreation related traumatic brain injuries occur in the United States yearly. Almost as many go unreported for lack of understanding of what a traumatic brain injury is or how it can affect an individual's overall health. This "silent epidemic" is a major health issue that is not only limited to professional or recreational sports, but affects both young and old, active and inactive. Since its beginning, The Wise Up! Initiative has been actively engaged in numerous events providing educational materials to over 3,000 individuals, as well as being the major sponsor for Alabama's first Cutting Edge Concussion Summit at Children's Hospital. By partnering with UAB Sports Medicine, Children's Hospital, and other local, state, and national organizations, Wise Up! is uniquely positioned for "making an invisible injury a visible issue."

Kevin Drake, Wise Up! Director of Programs and a former UAB and NFL football player, has appeared on local TV, radio and at community events sharing the impact concussions have had on his life. His personal experience motivates us to reach everyone with our message.

On September 27, 2014, The Al and Sharyne Wallace Family Foundation is hosting its inaugural "Wine and Dine" fundraiser to benefit the Wise Up! Initiative at The Wine Loft in Birmingham, AL. We invite you to join us and/or to be a sponsor of this event.  The proceeds from our "Wine and Dine" fundraiser further our cause to:
  • Raise awareness about the dangers of concussions and traumatic brain injuries
  • Educate the public about the risks associated with concussive head trauma
  • Advocate prevention for all age groups, sports and non-related causes
  • Support research to diagnose and treat brain injuries
